Esteban Rivas Basso
Esteban Rivas Basso is a lyrical bass, opera singer, and music educator whose artistic identity bridges the expressive traditions of classical vocal performance with a broad and deeply rooted love of music. His work embraces opera, concert repertoire, vocal and instrumental collaboration, and music education. With a stage presence shaped by dramatic storytelling and a commitment to musical detail, he approaches every performance as an opportunity to communicate with audiences through the voice.
His musical formation began in Mexico, including studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit, and continued in the United States through graduate studies in Music at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). At CSUN, he distinguished himself as the winner of the Aria Concerto Competition in 2026. This academic and artistic journey has strengthened his interest in vocal interpretation, musical research, and the relationship between music, language, and dramatic expression.
Esteban’s operatic repertoire includes roles such as Figaro, Bartolo, and Antonio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro; Sarastro and the First Priest in Die Zauberflöte; Masetto and the Commendatore in Don Giovanni; Colline in Puccini’s La Bohème; Dottore Grenvil in Verdi’s La Traviata; Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen; Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore; Guglielmo in Così fan tutte; Ben in Menotti’s The Telephone; the title role in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado; and Balthazar in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. These roles reflect his interest in the varied colors of the bass repertoire, from comic character work to noble and dramatic portrayals.
Alongside his performing career, Esteban is dedicated to teaching and making music accessible to learners of different ages and backgrounds. His educational work includes piano, acoustic and electric guitar, ukulele, bass guitar, and voice, as well as music theory, solfège, and music analysis across classical and popular styles. He has served as a music teacher, choir director, worship leader, and section leader in choral settings. His work with young students includes developing a ukulele-focused after-school program that combines songs, chords, rhythm, and percussion to encourage confidence, creativity, and ensemble skills.
As a versatile musician, Esteban also performs as a guitarist and session musician, bringing his experience across genres into collaborative projects. Whether on the operatic stage, in a concert setting, in a recording studio, or in the classroom, he remains devoted to expressive communication, continued artistic growth, and sharing the transformative power of music.
